Visit of Prof. Abbas Semnani to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Podgorica

On September 8, 2025, Prof. Abbas Semnani visited the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Montenegro. During his visit, he met with the Dean and the Head of the Energy and Automation study program, and introduced those present to his research work and achievements. At the conclusion of the meeting, it was agreed that cooperation should be intensified, and that all interested faculty members and/or students who wish to engage in Prof. Semnani’s research areas may contact him to explore possibilities for collaboration. Attached to this announcement is also a brief summary of Prof. Semnani’s research areas.

Short Biography

Prof. Abbas Semnani is an Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at The University of Toledo. Before joining Toledo in 2019, he spent seven years at Purdue University, where he focused on plasma–electromagnetic field interactions and plasma applications for radio-frequency tuning.

Education:

  • B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, University of Tehran, 2000.
  • M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from K. N. Toosi University of Technology (Iran), in 2002 and 2009, respectively.
  • During his Ph.D., he was a visiting scholar at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (2008), where he worked on the development and application of novel computational techniques for solving time-domain inverse scattering problems.

Prof. Semnani’s research interests include:

  • high-frequency microwaves
  • low-temperature plasma
  • RF nanotechnology
  • tunable elements and antenna arrays
  • reconfigurable RF electronics
  • inverse scattering, electrically small antennas, plasma metamaterials, computational electromagnetics/plasma physics

Awards and Honors:

  • Recipient of the IEEE Microwave & Wireless Components Letters (MWCL) “Tatsuo Itoh” Best Paper Award in 2019.
  • Awarded the NASA Glenn Faculty Fellowship in 2022.
  • Recipient of the NSF CAREER Award in 2024.
