Laboratory of plankton and sea water quality performs basic, applied and developmental scientific research of phytoplankton, zooplankton and bacterioplankton as well as determination of sanitary quality of sea water and sediment, especially:

  • determination of quality and quantity of phytoplankton communities
  • estimation of biomass of phytoplankton organisms by determining concentration of chlorophyll a
  • approximation of degree of eutrophication based on quantity of phytoplankton and content of species (phytoplankton organisms as indicators of ecosystem condition) as well as concentration of chlorophyll a
  • assessment and determination of potentially toxic and toxic phytoplankton species in breeders and in marine environment in general
  • monitoring of changes in content of autochthon phytoplankton organisms and of potential input of non native organisms
  • analysis of organisms in ships and monitoring of potential input of foreign species through ballast water
  • determination of quantity and content of zooplankton
  • monitoring of mass occurrence of jellyfish and other gelatinous organisms; determination of their quantity and potentially adverse effect on food chain
  • monitoring of change in content of autochthon zooplankton organisms and potential input of foreign organisms as well as monitoring of already present zooplankton species
  • studying of quality and quantity of autotrophic and heterotrophic picoplankton
  • approximation of biomass of picoplantonic organisms
  • studying of quality and quantity of mixotrophic and heterotrophic nanoplankton, and approximation of their biomass
  • determination of effect of ,,botom up” and,,top down” control on quality and quantity of bacterioplankton of specific areas
  • determination of sanitary quality of sea water (presence and quantity of coli in sea water, presence and quantity of intestinal enterococci in sea water, as well as other indicators)
  • determination of fecal coliform, streptococci and other indicators in sediment
  • effect of pollutants on distribution and structure of bacterial communities in sediment
  • production of project application, elaborates, studies, expertise regarding quality of sea water, as well as studies about bioecological (zero state) locations, and organizations of scientific workshops
