Researchers and associates of the Historical Institute of the University of Montenegro, at the official invitation of Dr. Gilliane Monnier and Prof. Gilbert Tostevin from the University of Minnesota, Goran Pajović from the National Museum of Montenegro, and Mile Baković from the Center for Conservation and Archeology of Montenegro visited the archaeological site of Crvena Stijena on July 21, 2022.

Crvena Stijena is one of the most important archaeological sites in Montenegro, unparalleled in the Balkans in terms of the complexity of Paleolithic archaeological deposits. The size of the strata and their archaeological richness allow the study of some of the most important questions about Neanderthal evolution. The site is staffed by a multinational team of archaeologists and experts who will excavate and analyze materials from the site using the highest standards of care and the latest scientific technologies designed to preserve most of what remains of the deposit for future generations.

During the visit, both to the actual excavations in the field and to the excellently equipped and designed laboratory, the researchers and associates of the Historical Institute were introduced to the research processes and the latest results of this years work. Specialists in various fields presented the methodologies and technologies of their research. Possibilities of further preservation of the site are also presented.

Prof. Dr. Gilliane Monnier, a scholar of the renowned Fulbright scholarship of the US Government, stayed in Montenegro since February of this year, and the Historical Institute of UoM was her academic host. Cooperation between our institutions will certainly continue in the future.
