Second and third year students of the Faculty of Political Science, Media Studies and Journalism study program participated in the second educational visit to the Agency for Audiovisual Media Services (AMU) as part of the Open Day. The students were welcomed by Public Relations and Project Management Officer Damir Nikočević, an alumnus of the University of Montenegro, who answered the students’ questions.

The Agency’s Director, Sunčica Bakić, held an interactive lecture during which she emphasized that understanding regulatory mechanisms is crucial for future media professionals, especially in the context of an increasingly complex media landscape. “Our task is to ensure that media content is in line with socially acceptable norms and standards, especially when it comes to the protection of minors and other vulnerable groups,” Bakić said. In her presentation, the Director focused on the importance of editorial control as a key element that distinguishes traditional media from social networks. “Your Instagram profile is not a medium. It is your communication with a selected audience, but without editorial responsibility,” she explained, warning of the danger of mixing personal expression and journalistic reporting.

Special attention was paid to the phenomenon of an unregulated market and the pressures faced by domestic media. “In a country with a population of 600,000, large advertisers often do not see the interest in investing, which makes the media vulnerable to political and economic influences,” said Sunčica Bakić, adding that financial independence is a prerequisite for professional journalism.

The students were also introduced to the concept of non-linear media services, such as video on demand content, as well as the new challenges that digital platforms and influencers bring to the sphere of media regulation. “By the end of the year, we expect the first influencers registered as providers of on-demand media services,” announced Bakić. The Agency Director also reminded the students of the importance of personal responsibility and professional integrity. “I don’t know any great journalist who became famous because he did what his editor told him to do. A journalist must have the courage to protect the public interest.”

After the lecture, the students toured the Agency’s premises and got to know the method of monitoring media content in practice.

The visit of the second group of students was carried out within the framework of the continuous cooperation between the Faculty of Political Sciences and the Agency for Audiovisual Media Services, with the aim of connecting theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the field of media policy and regulation.
