The international scientific conference entitled Language for Specific Purposes: Trends and Perspectives was held on 17-18 September 2021 in Budva, Montenegro. The conference was organised within Erasmus+ project ReFLAME (Reforming Foreign Languages in Academia in Montenegro) coordinated by the Faculty of Philology in cooperation with the EU project partners (University of Warsaw, University of Foreigners in Perugia, University of Zagreb) and national partners (Mediterranean University and University of Donja Gorica).

The conference attracted over 100 researchers in the fields of applied linguistics and foreign language teaching from numerous universities in Montenegro, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Greece, Poland, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Hungary, France, Algeria, Thailand, China and other countries. Branka Živković, PhD, and Biljana Šćepanović, Assoc. Prof., participated in the session dedicated to new textbooks of languages for specific purposes as a tangible result of the project. They gave a presentation on the textbook English for Civil Engineering authored by Branka Živković, PhD. The textbook received positive reviews from two experts employed at the EU partner universities – dr. hub. Elżbieta Gajek (University of Warsaw) and Danilo Rini (University of Foreigners in Perugia), as well as the expert in the field of civil engineering Biljana Šćepanović, Assoc. Prof. (University of Montenegro).

The textbook English for Civil Engineering is intended for the Faculty of Civil Engineering students, gradually taking them from the B2.2 to the C1 level of English according to the CEFR. The coursebook contains five modules. Each module consists of 2 lessons, and a total of 10 lessons make up the textbook. Each lesson includes four necessary language skills – listening, reading, speaking and writing, as well as the boxes related to grammar and vocabulary in the ESP context. At the end of the textbook there are three appendices dedicated to speaking and writing skills, a section with transcribed audio and video materials used, and the key for all the exercises in the textbook allowing for students’ self-assessment.

The textbook was tested at the ReFLAME summer school conducted in June/July 2021 within the Erasmus+ project ReFLAME. In that regard, taking into account the assessment of students and instructors surveyed at the end of the summer school, the new English for Civil Engineering textbook exceeded our expectations. It proved adequate means which enabled students to easily achieve the learning outcomes defined in the updated syllabi and closely related to the language use for professional purposes.

According to Biljana Šćepanović, the textbook will be of great use and help not only to civil engineering students and teaching staff at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, but also to civil engineers. The coursebook is an excellent source of general information in the domain of civil engineering and related disciplines, a very practical reference book for certain skills of business English required in the worldwide globalisation circumstances, as well as an interesting tool for business activities of presenting ourselves and our work (CV writing or preparation and delivery of project presentations).

Šćepanović and Živković’s participation in the international conference in Budva marked just the first step in the cooperation between teachers and experts in the field of civil engineering and language for civil engineering purposes teachers.
