The final meeting of NATO SPS project ”SUPERCAR”

The final meeting of the NATO SPS project "Carbon based batteries and supercapacitors, G5836", which promoted the activities and achieved results, was held on February 12th, 2024. in the library of the Faculty of Physical Chemistry, University of Belgrade. At the meeting, representatives of partner institutions gave an overview of the achieved results, and two young researchers engaged in the project gave a brief overview of their research.

During the three years of the project, significant results were achieved in the field of new carbon materials synthesis for use in the next generation energy storage systems. For the synthesis of highly porous carbons, the by-products of two important industrial branches in Montenegro, vine shoots and olive mill waste, were used. Synthesized carbons showed great potential for application and were used for the development of prototypes of a new type of aluminum-based supercapacitor and sodium-ion battery. Also, a contribution was made to the understanding of the processes that take place at the boundary between the carbon electrode and the electrolyte containing alternative monovalent (Na+) and multivalent (Ca2+, Mg2+ or Al3+) ions in the operating conditions of batteries and supercapacitors.

The project was realized between the Institute of Chemistry, Ljubljana, the Faculty of Physical Chemistry, University of Belgrade and the Faculty of Metallurgy and Technology, University of Montenegro.
