The Institute of Marine Biology of the University of Montenegro has started researching the early developmental stages of fish and assessing the biomass of anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus) in the Bay of Kotor and the high seas.

Based on the research results, it will be possible to determine the status of species, give recommendations for the preservation or improvement of certain areas of the sea in which fish spawn most intensively, but also determine which changes in the marine ecosystem affect the spatial distribution of early developmental stages of fish.

The research is conducted within the project "Support for the implementation and monitoring of water management in Montenegro" within the IPA 2016 annual program for Montenegro from the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA) in Montenegro.

Ichthyoplankton (early developmental stages of fish) is the basis for studying biology, i.e. the number and health of the sexually mature part of the fish population, which depends on the success in growth, development and survival of fish eggs and larvae and the conditions in which they live until they reach first sexual maturity.

The methodology of studying ichthyoplankton implies sampling with a special type of planktonic network, where the sample is taken vertically, from the bottom to the surface of the sea water, with the obligatory monitoring of the basic physical and chemical parameters of the sea. Detailed analyzes of samples are performed in the laboratories of the Institute of Marine Biology, UMNE.

The aim of this research is to determine the diversity of early developmental stages of fish, to estimate the biomass of the adult anchovy population (to estimate the amount of resources) and to determine spawning and feeding zones.

The IPA 2016 annual program for Montenegro involves monitoring in accordance with the recommendations of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive, and is implemented by the consulting company EPTISA Engineering Services through its Regional Office for Southeast Europe (Belgrade), Republic of Serbia.
