Modern Marine Monitoring through the IAEA - #26/65

The Institute of Marine Biology actively participates in programmes of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) through INT (interregional) and RER (Regional Europe) projects. These projects aim to strengthen research capacities and support the application of modern methods in the field of marine environmental protection and sustainable management of natural resources.

Through its involvement in these projects, the Institute carries out activities focused on assessing the condition of marine ecosystems, monitoring pollutants in seawater, sediments and marine organisms, and analysing the impacts of climate change and human activities on the Adriatic Sea ecosystem. Of particular importance is the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques, which enable more precise and reliable tracking of ecological processes, the circulation of substances and sources of pollution in the marine environment.

By participating in the INT project Strengthening Ocean Health for Sustainable Development: A Global Approach Using Nuclear and Isotopic Techniques and the RER projects Enhancing Coastal Management in the Adriatic and the Black Sea by Using Nuclear Analytical Techniques and Enhancing Coastal Management in the Mediterranean, the Black Sea, Caspian Sea and the Aral Sea by Using Nuclear Analytical Techniques, the Institute’s researchers benefit from cooperation with leading institutions and experts, knowledge exchange and access to advanced scientific methodologies and laboratory techniques. The projects include training courses, workshops, scientific meetings and study visits, which contribute to professional development and strengthen institutional capacities.

In addition to their scientific value, IAEA projects play an important role in strengthening national and regional capacities for high-quality marine environmental monitoring. Through these projects, the Institute of Marine Biology has been equipped with highly sensitive instrumentation, enabling it to actively contribute data relevant to environmental policy-making, marine resource conservation and the fulfilment of international obligations in the field of ecology and sustainable development.

Through continuous participation in IAEA projects, the Institute confirms its position as a relevant research institution in the region, recognised for its expertise and contribution to the conservation of marine ecosystems in the Adriatic and Mediterranean Seas. Such cooperation represents an important step towards further development of science, innovation and Montenegro’s international scientific engagement.
