Representatives of the Institute of Marine Biology, University of Montenegro, took part in the 58th edition of the European Marine Biology Symposium (EMBS), held from 6 to 9 July this year in the town of Bodø, located within the Arctic Circle in Norway. The EMBS was organised by the European Marine Research Network and Nord University.

Researchers from the Institute presented their work through several poster presentations. The poster “Contemporary catch composition and abundance in Montenegrin small-scale fisheries” showcases the structure of the catch in Montenegrin coastal small-scale fisheries, based on 72 samples collected from multiple ports during 2023 and 2024. A total of 72 different species were recorded. Most of the catch consisted of fish, with a very low proportion of discarded catch (around 5%), indicating the selectivity and efficiency of this fishing practice.

The poster “Using citizen science to collect elasmobranch observations in Montenegro” presents the outcomes of a citizen science initiative to gather data on the presence of elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) in Montenegro. Local fishers and citizens contributed records of 28 species and a total of 1,834 individuals. The initiative has proven to be an effective and accessible method for monitoring the biodiversity of these threatened species in the region.

The third presentation, titled “Mild changes in the phytoplankton community along the Montenegrin coast”, reports on research into phytoplankton communities and the frequency of algal blooms in Boka Kotorska Bay and along the Montenegrin coast during 2023 and 2024. Dominant groups identified included diatoms and dinoflagellates, along with the presence of potentially toxic species such as Pseudo-nitzschia spp. and Dinophysis, suggesting mild but noteworthy changes that require continuous monitoring.

This long-established scientific gathering brought together over 200 participants from across Europe and beyond, including students, researchers, project managers and policy-makers. The symposium featured a broad range of disciplines such as marine biology, ecology and oceanography, and included interdisciplinary sessions, workshops and panel discussions with a focus on current research and initiatives within the Horizon Europe programme. The EMBS was first held on the island of Helgoland in Germany and has since taken place annually (with the exception of 1973).
