Ceremonial hall of the University of Montenegro Rectorate was filled to capacity during the award ceremony for the top participants of the 17th Knowledge Olympiad organized by the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The event brought together the most successful primary and secondary school students, their mentors, teachers, and representatives of the academic community.

The best competitors in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and programming were recognized and awarded in an atmosphere of support, pride, and enthusiastic applause. This year’s Knowledge Olympiad, held on 15 May 2026, gathered more than 500 students from Montenegrin primary and secondary schools, who demonstrated outstanding knowledge, talent, and dedication.

The award ceremony was attended by the Rector of the University of Montenegro, Vladimir Božović, PhD; the President of the University’s Board of Directors, Milivoje Radović, PhD; the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Miljan Bigović, PhD; the Director of the Centre for Ecotoxicological Research, Dr. Nikola Svrkota; the Director of the Institute for Medicines and Medical Devices, Snežana Mugoša, PhD; representatives of the Society of Mathematicians and Physicists of Montenegro; deans, vice-deans, professors, test authors and evaluators, mentors, students, and guests.

The President of the University’s Board of Directors, Milivoje Radović, PhD, emphasized symbolic significance of the Knowledge Olympiad.

“When we hear the word Olympiad, we first think of the Olympic flame, whose origins date back to Ancient Greece and which symbolizes continuity, tradition, and the idea that excellence is passed on from generation to generation. You, the distinguished winners of the Knowledge Olympiad, represent that flame—a beacon whose knowledge illuminates the face of our society. The University of Montenegro is here to support you, to preserve this legacy, and to strengthen the belief that investing in education always pays off,” Radović said.

He encouraged the award-winning students to approach their talents responsibly, with curiosity, hard work, and perseverance.

“I am confident that your talent and dedication will lead you to many more victories, both nationally and internationally. Be responsible toward your talent. Remain curious and diligent, and you will continue to push the boundaries of knowledge and achievement,” Radović stated, congratulating the winners, mentors, and all Olympiad participants.

The Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Miljan Bigović, PhD, highlighted that today’s winners represent a force capable of improving the position of natural sciences and mathematics in society.

“My heart is always full when I see so many young people—potential future scientists, individuals who will carry the torch of science—especially in a country where natural sciences and mathematics do not enjoy the status they deserve. That is precisely why we are here, both you and us: so that tomorrow, once you have mastered everything for which you have likely been gifted, you can help us elevate these disciplines to the level they deserve,” said Bigović.

The Dean reminded the audience that the Faculty introduced a new Chemistry study programme last year, thereby completing its family of natural science disciplines. He also announced plans to establish a study programme for teaching mathematics and computer science in primary schools. In his view, this would further strengthen Montenegro’s education system, particularly given the shortage of professionals in STEM fields.

He expressed gratitude to the University of Montenegro leadership for supporting the Faculty in organizing the 17th Knowledge Olympiad, noting that the event requires considerable organizational and financial effort each year. He also extended special thanks to colleagues from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the Faculty of Technology, as well as to test authors, evaluators, associates, and volunteers, whose commitment has helped maintain the Olympiad’s quality and continuity.

“As Dean and as a professor of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, nothing would make me happier than continuing to work together in the years ahead, building an even stronger Montenegrin scientific community,” Bigović said.

Following the speeches, awards were presented to students according to their competition categories. The awards were presented by Rector Vladimir Božović, PhD, Dr. Nikola Svrkota, Director of the Centre for Ecotoxicological Research, Snežana Mugoša, PhD, Director of the Institute for Medicines and Medical Devices, Dean Miljan Bigović, PhD, and Sofija Stanišić.

The ceremony also recognized students who received commendations for their achievements in physics, biology, and chemistry at the 17th Knowledge Olympiad in both primary and secondary school categories. Special plaques were awarded by Academician Svjetlana Terzić, PhD, to students who achieved maximum number of points on tests.

The 17th Knowledge Olympiad once again confirmed that Montenegro has young people who are eager to learn, explore, compete, and push the boundaries of knowledge. Organized jointly by the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of the University of Montenegro and the Society of Mathematicians and Physicists of Montenegro, with the support of the University of Montenegro and partner institutions, this event remains an important platform for recognizing and supporting young talent.
