People from Kolasin and Savnik are the Tallest in the World

Even though height at Montenegrins has dramatically risen in average during 20th century they are not anymore on top of scale of highest nations in the world. According to research of Roberta Ehrich from the beginning of 20th century, Montenegrins were the tallest nation in the world, with average height of 177 cm; however today, event though more than 6 cm taller, in average, in the recent research, Stevo Popović, PhD, from the Faculty for Sport and Physical Education of the University of Montenegro, claims that Montenegrins are, with average height of 183,36 cm, on the second place, while leading position is held by the Dutch when it comes to anthropometrical measure, with 183,8 cm.

In his research published in “Montenegrin Journal for Sport Science and Medicine", professor Popovic has carried out height analysis per municipalities and he reached interesting data stating that average height of people from Kolasin and Savnik is 185 cm, while in Danilovgrad, Niksic,  Pluzine and Zabljak, men are tall over 184 cm in average. On the other hand, the shortest Montenegrins who substantially lower the average at national level live in Plav and Andrijevica and in Cetinje with average height which slightly exceeds 181 cm.

It is interesting to emphasize that last summer research was conducted managed by professors from Imperial College in London, where they analyzed centurial trend when body height is in question; however, the group of scientists, even though it analyzed almost all nations in the planet, it omitted to determine historic values when it comes to height of the tallest nation from the beginning of 20th century, as well as today’s values, therefore, research of a Montenegrin scientist is very important addition to stated global study.

Professor Popovic participated in series of researches in the region, and the latest study conducted with his colleagues lead by Czech researcher, Pavel Grasgruber from Masarik University in Brno, determined that the tallest people live in Bosnia and Herzegovina in part of Herzegovina which geographically leans on Montenegro, so it presents the fact which adds to and confirms results achieved in Montenegrin study, i.e. it closes geographical space which presents one whole where the tallest people in the world live.

“Answer to the question why Montenegrins are not still the tallest nation in the world, after 100 years, may be found in better life conditions in developed countries such as Netherlands or in better diet, hygiene, as well as in economic and health status of people in those countries. With raising standard in region of Dinar Alps, it is greatly possible that these values will be equalized with values from the beginning of previous century, i.e. Montenegrins will again be the tallest nation in the world“, professor Popovic believes.
