Faculty of Maritime Studies Kotor Awarded a Project by the Innovation Fund of Montenegro

The Dean of the Faculty of Maritime Studies Kotor, University of Montenegro, Professor Tatijana Dlabač, signed the funding agreement for the project “SAM4MI: Smart Acoustic Monitoring for Induction Motors using AI” (original title: “Pametni akustički nadzor asinhronih motora uz primjenu vještačke inteligencije”) which has been approved for co-financing by the Innovation Fund of Montenegro under the program line “Proof of Concept (PoC)”.

The project is currently at the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3–4, meaning that the core innovation principle is verified under controlled laboratory conditions. Experimental research will be carried out in the Laboratory for Marine Electrical Engineering and Electronics at the Faculty of Maritime Studies Kotor.

The goal of the SAM4MI project is to develop an innovative acoustic monitoring system for induction motors using artificial intelligence, enabling the estimation of key operational parameters: speed, torque, and current, based solely on the sound signals emitted by the motor during operation. This approach allows performance monitoring without any direct electrical or mechanical connection, ensuring a simpler, safer, and more cost-effective method for supervising electric motor drives.

During project implementation, experimental measurements will be conducted, including the recording of motor sound under various load conditions and the training of neural networks capable of predicting motor behavior in real time.

The total project budget amounts to €37,876.09, and the implementation period runs from November 1, 2025 to November 1, 2026.

The Project Leader is MSc Ilija Knežević, Teaching Assistant at the Faculty of Maritime Studies Kotor. The project team consists of Professor Martin Ćalasan, Profesor Tatijana Dlabač, Dr. Mihailo Micev, and MSc Nemanja Pudar.

The SAM4MI project represents another step forward in strengthening the research and innovation capacities of the Faculty of Maritime Studies Kotor and the University of Montenegro, contributing to the development of advanced solutions in the field of marine electrical engineering and electronics.
