Biography

Slobodan (Branislav) Marković was born on November 15, 1970. in Zrenjanin. He completed his studies at the Institute of Geography, PMF of the University of Novi Sad in just 3 years with an average grade of 9.31. He received his masters degree in 1996 and his doctorate in 2000. Since 1994, he has been employed as an assistant at the Institute of Geography, and was elected full professor in 2009. He was the head of the Department of Physical Geography on 2 occasions (2006-2012, 2015-2019). He was the mentor of 12 doctoral theses. He was a Humboldt fellow at the University of Bayreuth, Germany. In 2013, he was a visiting researcher with a scholarship of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and in 2017 he was awarded a scholarship by the President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics in Beijing. He was a visiting professor at the University of Wroclaw (November-December 2015).

Professor Marković is an editor in the journals: Quaternary International (2012-2015), Open Geosciences, Quaternary, Geoscience, Acta Geographica Slovenica, Geographica Pannonica (in 2005-2007 he was editor-in-chief) and Journal of Geographical Institute "Jovan Cvijić" SASA.

Since 2015, he has been a member of SANU as the youngest member at the time he was admitted to this prestigious institution. He is by far the most productive researcher in the scientific field of geography in Serbia and the region, both in terms of the number of papers published in journals from the ISI list (211) and in terms of citations. According to the citation database, the most cited researcher is from the University of Novi Sad. For 2020 and 2021, he was included in the list of the most cited scientists in the world by Stanford University. He is the winner of the "Milutin Milanković" award for contribution to the development of science in AP Vojvodina for the year 2023.
