Biography 

Full Professor,  Olivera Miljanović, MD, PhD,  was born in Titograd (now Podgorica) in 1960. She finished Elementary school and Grammar in her born town.


She graduated from the Medical Faculty in Belgrade in 1985. Specializing in pediatrics started in December 1988, and passed final exam in March.1993 at the Medical Faculty in Belgrade. At the same faculty she has finished sub-specialization in clinical genetics in 2006.

She attended postgraduate studies in medical genetics at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zagreb in period 1989/91. Masters thesis produced from scientific research project at the Institute of Medicine of the University of Montenegro, she defended at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade in 1998.  Doctoral thesis entitled "The association of cytokine genes polymorphisms and local immune responses in children prone to acute otitis media" defended in 2010 at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Kragujevac.

In order to professional and scientific training she attended numerous international schools and a specialization abroad, among them the schools: TIORCAS project "Molecular genetics techniques in the analysis of pathogenic mutations in genetic diseases", University of Campobasso; "Emergency care and pediatrics," the US-Austrian Foundation and the Childrens University Hospital in Philadelphia, Salzburg and "Recent advances in human genetics ", Inter University Center Dubrovnik and study visits to the Queen, the University, Canada; Cochran - Biotechnology Science Training, USDA Washington; Institute of Medical Genetics, School of Medicine, University of Bari and at the Department of Medical Genetics Pediatric Clinic "Rebro", Zagreb.

Since the beginning of professional career, she is working at the Clinical Center of Montenegro. She was director of the Clinical Center of Montenegro from 2007 to 2011, and director of the Institute for Childrens Diseases Clinical Center of Montenegro from 1999 to 2005. She founded a department for Clinical Genetics at the Childrens Clinic in 1993. With a team of collaborators she introduced modern procedures of medical genetics and established the Center for Medical Genetics and Immunology, Clinical Center of Montenegro, and is a head of the Center from its founding in 2000.


She was elected to teaching assistant at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Montenegro, in 2001, to assistant professor in 2011, to associate professor in 2017 and to full professor in 2023. She is teaching in pediatrics, biomedicine and bioethics and clinical genetics. She is president of the Committee for Medical Ethics and Bioethics and Head of the Research center at the Faculty of Medicine University of Montenegro. She was vice dean for education affairs at the same faculty in the period 2013 - 2018. 

She was engaged at the Institute of Medicine of the University of Montenegro as a researcher since 1988, and was the principal investigator in three national research projects. Additionally she was head of the national scientific-research project "Congenital anomalies in Montenegro: molecular mechanisms of genomic disorders: clinical and epidemiological characteristics", in the period 2012-2016. She is the author and co-author of over 100 articles, published introductory lectures and presentations in international and national journals and at conferences, of which 14 in journals on SCI list. The author has 10 chapters in monographs, reference books and manuals.

She has a mentor status for residency in pediatrics and medical genetics since 1994, decision Following the Scientific Council of the Medical Faculty in Belgrade

She holds a title of Primarius since 2008.

She is a member of the Committee on Medical Research CANU since 1998, International Forum of teachers (IFT) UNESCO Chair in Bioethics from 2014, the Committee on Bioethics of the Council of Europe and the Council of Europe Committee for the Prevention of tissues and cells trafficking since 2011, the Council of the Association of preventive pediatrics of Montenegro, member of Editorial Board of scientific journals Medical Data and Medical Essays .
