At the Medical Faculty of the University of Montenegro, the book "Surgery with Anesthesiology" was promoted, authored and edited by professors and associates of the Medical Faculty in Belgrade. This textbook has become mandatory literature for students at the Medical Faculty of the University of Montenegro starting from this academic year.
Welcoming the authors, Dean of the Medical Faculty, Professor Dr. Miodrag Radunović, expressed that the world of books is the most beautiful world created by humans, where lines woven with knowledge and contemporary scientific achievements are eternal witnesses of the time they were written.
"From today’s world of books, I highlight the textbook Surgery with Anesthesiology, edited by Prof. Dr. Aleksandar Simić, Prof. Dr. Danica Grujičić, and Doc. Dr. Dušan Spasovski. This book represents the sixth in a series of textbooks from the Department of Surgery at the Medical Faculty of the University of Belgrade, which has made an invaluable contribution to the education of students and doctors in the region," said Radunović.
Emphasizing the authors decades-long work, he noted that with their educational assistance, the foundation of modern achievements in surgical practice in Montenegro has been built, training a significant number of surgeons, neurosurgeons, vascular surgeons, angiology specialists, and cardiothoracic surgeons from this region.
"This textbook promotion is being held in the jubilee year of the University of Montenegro. With pride, we celebrate 50 years of dedication to creating knowledge, developing academic society, and promoting expertise, and through such encounters, we continue to build strong bridges of science and knowledge to the region and Europe," said Prof. Radunović.
The textbook Surgery with Anesthesiology is a modern teaching aid with over 1,000 pages, organized into 97 chapters grouped into four main sections. Respecting didactic principles, readers progress from introductory chapters covering general surgical terms, ethical principles, and the history of world surgery, through sections on general surgery and anesthesiology, to chapters on special surgery, containing information from a total of 11 surgical disciplines.
"Today, we present a book that incorporates the experiences of all surgeons throughout the centuries of the development of this branch of medicine, from the first steps of our ancient colleagues to contemporary robotics, which we once only glimpsed as part of science fiction but now confidently apply in our work," said one of the authors, Prof. Dr. Danica Grujičić.
Drawing a parallel with the first medical textbook in Serbia printed in 1865, which was written by hand and contained only 40 lithographed images, she noted that almost 160 years later, the University of Belgrade’s Medical Faculty has a modernly designed textbook with 809 color illustrations and graphs on 1062 pages.
Speaking about his work on the textbook, Prof. Dr. Aleksandar Simić, one of the editors and authors, said that in contemporary education, permeated by the explosion of digital information, the significance of printed surgical textbooks should not be underestimated, as the need for them does not diminish over time but rather becomes a necessity.
"In an environment of endless, often unprocessed, and sometimes inaccurate readily available data, a quality textbook, with its concise summary of numerous pieces of information, becomes the main reference from which one can learn not only the basics but also gain a broader perspective necessary for further knowledge. It has been proven that a quality textbook, compared to digital formats, leads to better understanding, memorization, and application of knowledge, especially when encountering previously unfamiliar concepts," said Prof. Simić.
Dean of the Medical Faculty in Belgrade, Prof. Dr. Lazar Davidović, stated that this book provides a quality textbook from which medical students will be able to learn surgery and anesthesiology more easily than before, and all professors will verify this in the upcoming exam sessions.
