Interreg-Adrion-HarmoNIA

Project HarmoNIA (Harmonization and Networking for contaminant assessment in the Ionian and Adriatic Seas) was  approved within the First call of the Adriatic-Ionian Programme (ADRION).

The main objective of HarmoNIA is to strengthen the transnational frameworks for increased interoperability of existing databases for the management of the marine environment in order to promote data availability and increase marine knowledge. In this way a good basis for the implementation of the Marine Framework Strategy Directive and UNEP/MAP protocols in the Adriatic – Ionian region will be ensured.

The project will provide basic tools to assess contamination risk in vulnerable coastal zones in case study areas. Institutions involved in MSFD and UNEP/MAP protocol implementation, as well as local, regional and national authorities in charge of environmental assessment, management, conservation, public and private bodies involved in marine and coastal infrastructures planning and research institutions will benefit from the outcomes of the project.

The project will be implemented by a multi-disciplinary team which includes as project partners research institutes and regional authorities from six countries (Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania and Greece) bordering the Adriatic and Ionian Sea. Lead  partner is the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS) from Trieste, Italy. The project duration is 22 months with a budget of 1, 367,558.00 €.
