Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday that falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, which is late May or June in the Gregorian calendar. This year, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on June 22, and together with the Spring Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival, it is one of the most important Chinese holidays.
The history of this festival dates back to the period of the warring states in China. According to old legends, there was a minister of the state of Chu who supported the decision to wage war against the state of Qin. This ministers name was Qu Yuan. To express his displeasure and disgust with the war plan, the king banished Qu Yuan. During his exile, Qu Yuan wrote various patriotic poems that expressed his love and vision for China. Among these songs written by Ku Yuan is the world famous "Lament".
When the State of Qin began to conquer and take over China, Qu Yuan drowned in the Miluo River in 278 BC. It is said that Qu Yuan loved China so much that he would rather die than see it fall into the hands of the Qin state. After his death, Ku Yuans works gained more and more popularity. As he gained prestige as a writer and patriot, the Dragon Boat Festival began to be celebrated in his honor.
During the Dragon Boat Festival, you can enjoy a variety of dishes made especially for this holiday. Zongzi (zòng zi) is one of the most common delicacies. These are sticky rice dumplings that are filled with rice, beans and other ingredients and spices. Sometimes they are wrapped in a bamboo or rice leaf. The taste and texture of zongzi vary greatly by region and chef.
