Campaign for Strengthening Academic Integrity: ‘Knowledge is in, have a Title within’ initiated by the UoM
The University of Montenegro has launched a campaign aimed at strengthening academic integrity "Knowledge is in, have a Title within".
The campaign is implemented by the Quality Assurance Center of the University of Montenegro in cooperation with the Career Development Center and the Student Parliament of the University of Montenegro with the support of the Council of Europe.
"Through this campaign, the University of Montenegro seeks to raise awareness of academic integrity, promote good academic practices and highlight the responsibility of all members of the academic community: both academic staff and students and employees," Director of the UoM Quality Assurance Center, Sanja Pekovic, PhD, said.
Under the slogan "Create. Don't plagiarize’, the campaign will highlight important issues in the academic integrity of the individual and the academic community through promotional material, organizing workshops and seminars, as well as the role of all members of the community, preserving and enhancing ethical principles in higher education.
In order to prevent inappropriate academic behavior, undergraduate students are taught a code of academic honesty within their teaching subjects, and students of postgraduate studies master the rules of academic writing at the subject Methodology of Scientific Research.
Also, within the recently completed project "Strengthening Integrity and Combating Corruption in Higher Education", the University of Montenegro will provide online courses for students on the principles of ethical conduct in higher education, with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of academic integrity at all levels of higher education. The Council of Europe continues to support the strengthening of the ethical dimension of higher education through the Quality Education for All project.
In addition to the aforementioned activities, through which the University strives to continuously develop awareness of and improve the ethics, responsibility and integrity of the Montenegrin academic community, and a number of research activities will be performed in the future, with focusing on academic integrity, through the project Strengthening Academic Integrity - An Interdisciplinary Research Approach to Ethical Behavior in Higher Education. It is a national research project supported by the Ministry of Science and will implement a number of practical activities intended to improve academic integrity.
“The University of Montenegro has paid a great attention to the issues of academic integrity in the previous period. We have also managed to initiate various projects addressing this important and current topic. A series of new activities (workshops, seminars, round tables, etc.) will follow, which will contribute to raising awareness of academic integrity and gaining the necessary knowledge on ethical issues in teaching and research. In doing so, UoM reaffirms its full commitment to fundamental ethical issues in science and teaching, "Pekovic said.
The Project on Strengthening Academic Integrity will gather important empirical indicators and, based on this information, will develop teaching materials that will serve to learn about academic integrity through regular classes, workshops, seminars and other activities.
